What is vegetable-tanned leather?

Vegetable-tanned leather is leather turned from raw hide into a lasting material using natural tannins — extracts from tree bark, leaves and other plants — instead of chemicals. It's the oldest tanning method there is, and the slowest. The payoff is leather with real character, a warm hand, and a surface that ages and softens beautifully rather than just wearing out.

Most leather today isn't made this way. Here's why we still are.

How leather is tanned, briefly

Raw hide will rot. Tanning is the process that turns it into stable, lasting leather. There are two main ways to do it, and they produce genuinely different materials.

Vegetable tanning (the slow way)

Raw hides are soaked in baths of natural tannins drawn from plants. It takes weeks. The result is firm, characterful leather that develops a rich patina over time — it darkens, softens and takes on the marks of use. This is the traditional method, and it's still how the best leather goods are made. It's also the method long common in Pakistan, where our family has worked in leather for a century.

Chrome tanning (the fast way)

Most modern leather is chrome-tanned: raw hides are treated with chromium salts in a process that takes a day or two instead of weeks. It's faster, cheaper and produces soft, uniform, colour-consistent leather at scale. It's not "bad" leather — most of the world's leather is chrome-tanned — but it's a different thing. It tends to stay as it started rather than improving, and the process is harder on the environment when it isn't carefully managed.

Neither is universally "better." For a fast-fashion jacket meant for a season, chrome tanning makes sense. For a jacket you intend to keep — and that's the only kind we make — vegetable tanning is worth the time and cost.

Why veg-tanned leather ages better

This is the heart of it. Vegetable-tanned leather is alive in a way chrome-tanned leather mostly isn't. The natural tannins let the leather keep developing after it leaves the workshop. Worn over time, it:

  • Darkens and deepens in tone, especially where light and hands touch it most.
  • Softens and moulds to your body, so an old jacket fits like nothing else.
  • Earns a patina — the soft sheen and character that only comes from being worn.

A chrome-tanned jacket looks much the same in year five as year one. A vegetable-tanned one looks like yours — which is the whole point of buying leather instead of something cheaper. The responsible side

Vegetable tanning uses natural, often renewable tannins and produces less harsh chemical waste than poorly managed chrome tanning. That's a real difference, and it's worth being honest about both halves of it: vegetable tanning is the gentler process, but how a tannery is run matters as much as the method.

That's why where the leather comes from matters too. Our leather is sourced from LWG-certified suppliers — the Leather Working Group sets environmental standards for tanneries — and our jackets are cut and finished in a BSCI-certified production facility, which audits social and labour standards. We'd rather point you to certifications that mean something than make a vague "eco" claim. Responsible leather is a chain, not a label.

A century in leather

Vegetable tanning isn't a marketing choice for us. It's the family trade.

Our family has worked in leather in Pakistan for a hundred years — first trading hides, then tanning them, then building the manufacturing units that make jackets for labels around the world. STREGA is the part of that we make for ourselves: our own label, sold direct, using the same honest material and methods the family has always known.
